A second blog? I’m impressed- you’re already the most prolific blogger I know. I think I only post about half as often as you and I can’t imagine cranking out another blog! Anyway if you do please make sure to announce it on your main blog.Watcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02248341788957416471noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-35229914050846939032009-09-24T16:09:28.108-06:002009-09-24T16:09:28.108-06:00Watcher: I share your disdain for single speeds bu...Watcher: I share your disdain for single speeds but I have so many friends who ride them that I can't blog about it. But, just recently, I watched an overweight 20-something guy walk up the tiniest hill because he had single speed. It's hardly even a hill... so why is he on a SS?

I think that it has to do with sexual selection. If you look around blogs, guys are always giving 'props' to their buddies who ride SS with monster gears. I think that these misguided guys actually think that we girls are impressed. Ha! They've got me wrong - but I'm not the age population that they're trying to impress. Notice single speed and sexual selection are both 'SS'!

I was an academic in biology (biomechanics of locomotion in humans and other animals, to be specific) until I gave up a couple of years ago. I was in too much agony all the time from trying to sit for the huge hours required of an academic. I'm still publishing stuff but I'm not actively researching anything now. In fact, I'm kind of searching for my next calling.

I keep my professional stuff out of my blog because I don't want to end up writing about science too much. I've done that for years and years - so I'm trying to find a new niche.

That being said, I'm now considering starting separate blog that highlights a great paper in my field every week. As you can see, I'm still a bit mixed up about what's next.

If you ever want to email me, I'm at kynabear5 at gmail dot com.KBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16885661679762446456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-54890495985240755602009-09-22T20:52:50.846-06:002009-09-22T20:52:50.846-06:00SBJ- good one! We’re not giving up on TwinB & piano, but we’re definitely making some changes, including checking out the Suzuki method. And thanks Kristen for the phrenological observation- I’m pointing that out to AW.

Sally- I like you even more now that I know you’re in the elite 30%!

Nick- I stopped by your blog and your beard looks excellent. You look way bad-ass.

Kris- my next blog will be a creationist blog, where just quote old testament verse and make graphics of people riding dinosaurs. You will love it! (I’m working on a totally awesome graphic of you riding a T-Rex…)

Dug- if my pics scare you, whatever you do, don’t click on the whiskerino links Bob provided. You’ll have nightmares for months… and yes that elldub guy’s photo-diary was impressive. (and inspiring)

KB- Someday you’ll have to mention in your blog what it is you do. You’ve made references that suggest some type of scientist and/or academic, but I’d be curious to know your field (if you can share it without revealing your identity!)Watcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02248341788957416471noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-38214320991327391662009-09-22T19:36:16.433-06:002009-09-22T19:36:16.433-06:00I enjoyed this post, tangents, nested tangents, et...I enjoyed this post, tangents, nested tangents, etc.

I've sat through approximately a million seminars that talked about natural selection, and they didn't separate out sexual selection but instead included it as part of natural selection. Enough to get by, anyway.

Then I started on the violin-- and my difficulties in reading sheet music manifested dramatically. I'm a whiz at playing by ear, though, which managed to get me by in high school, but to this day sight reading music is so not my thing.

Great post today, I'm glad you posted some of your sources! I'm always on the look-out for more interesting reading material, can't wait to dig into some of Mr Diamond's stuff.

Oh, and you don't look like the prez of Iran, your head is a better shape than his. :)KristenThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01187723351100391708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-25064462265012846172009-09-22T11:10:22.517-06:002009-09-22T11:10:22.517-06:00The beard looks awesome. Perhaps when it's all gray I can try again.

All this natural world stuff is too complex, it hurts my brain. It's easier to stick with a 1,000 year old earth and a little story about how everything was made in a few days. ;-)KanyonKrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954169751206336705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-16127780734281892002009-09-22T10:52:44.364-06:002009-09-22T10:52:44.364-06:00I was going to blog today, but now I'm out of ...I was going to blog today, but now I'm out of time... [grin] Good read, though! Actually, incredible.

I offer an odd case, though, for your further consideration. I've always been attracted to beards (maybe it is the element of danger, who knows?) but, as I mentally flip thru the old-boyfriends file, almost never actually had a relationship with someone who had one.* The Husband, Darling as he is, has some of those eastern-type genes and can't even grow one!
