I heard a couple of sad statements by co-workers recently that portends badly for their future retirement: "I was bored last weekend so I came into work" and "I'm at the gym (which is close to our office) anyway on Saturday so I might as well come in for a few hours and catch up on e-mails"

My wife comes from a long line of workaholics and I am seriously concerned about her ability to retire. However, it's a long way off so maybe that will change.Colinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17690981291104861282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-66408089918623237472010-04-02T10:18:14.704-06:002010-04-02T10:18:14.704-06:00Watcher, yeah, I don't think your ideas would ...Watcher, yeah, I don't think your ideas would fly in red state Utah. I like "defend the land" for a concept/bumper sticker. Need more people that can look further out into the future. (I have a whole rant on the stupidity and lack of foresight of Drill Baby, Drill that I am sure most people on both sides of the aisle could agree on)

I am curious about the WV idea, though (I couldn't figure it out in less than 2 minutes, my laziness) - I can't wait for that post.

mtb wAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-17809870623818824352010-04-01T21:38:56.967-06:002010-04-01T21:38:56.967-06:00Kris, don’t even say it- that’s all I need! It’s just a recurring ache I get occasionally on long climbs, and I think it was exacerbated by a fully-loaded camelbak- first ride with one this year.

Enel- I already posted about non-theist-libertarians, remember?

mtb w- ah yes, you’re right. As you told about the back pain persisting I was growing concerned you had a kidney stone - I've had 2 so I'm always leery of back pains.KanyonKrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954169751206336705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-41577475386370395902010-04-01T15:09:43.599-06:002010-04-01T15:09:43.599-06:00So many things to comment on... but let me say tha...So many things to comment on... but let me say that I feel the same way about long solo rides and my mental outlook.

At one point in your post, I thought that you were getting the 'lube' out to make your back feel better. Let's see - just squirt some down the back of my shirt and I'll be all better :)

I agree about "defend the land" but I've ended up with really mixed feelings about wilderness areas. They attract more people, for one thing. We had a nice quiet place where we used to go to hike and xc ski regularly and see maybe 8 people all day on a weekend hike - that is, until they made it a wilderness area. Now, the trailhead has 100 cars by mid-morning on a weekend. I hate it and almost never go there anymore.

BTW, you can make a National forest area a no ATV, no logging, etc area without declaring it wilderness.

But, I digress - I agree that defending the land is most important.

Last, I also find myself speechless when people say that they'd be bored if they retired. I'm essentially retired but still wish that every day were about 4 hours longer than it is so that I could possibly fit all the things that I want to do into a day.KBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16885661679762446456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-23726271222267946532010-04-01T13:04:28.242-06:002010-04-01T13:04:28.242-06:00Just what I needed. If I had millions I'd quit my job immediately. The time freedom is the biggest thing to me - no 9-5, a free schedule to fill as I please. I'd travel more, some far away but many local trips just poking around Utah. To go ride whenever I felt like it - that's luxury. There are so many things to learn, see, experience in this world, there's no way I'd stay chained to a job. And my mind is boggled by those who would keep working.KanyonKrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954169751206336705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-67240064146693613302010-04-01T10:36:41.328-06:002010-04-01T10:36:41.328-06:00I like the skiing footage; havent seen it on a hel...I like the skiing footage; havent seen it on a helmet cam vid before.Chickenlegshttp://www.thefamilyadventure.net/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-51716984460267827192010-04-01T10:23:59.794-06:002010-04-01T10:23:59.794-06:00What a great post. I enjoyed your format - kind of like showing your thoughts as you ride, alternating between the exterior (the ride itself) and the interior (your mental thoughts), as you work towards the end (in both worlds).

I sometimes imagine a world where everyone's physical needs are taken care of w/o the need for working so you can pursue your true goals w/o the lying/putting on a face for clients/customers/bosses/ etc. But, ultimately I don't think it would work and reminds of "Player Piano" by Kurt Vonnegut.

In any event, good pick for a long ride! So, have you considered being a politician when you early-retire? Oh wait, that would just mean more putting on a face/lying (Ok, there are some good politicians, but they seem very rare) and I am not sure your politics would play well in your area.

mtb wAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-43697737119665631832010-04-01T09:23:22.384-06:002010-04-01T09:23:22.384-06:00You should be more libertarian leaning with your a...You should be more libertarian leaning with your anti-authority leanings:)Enelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00967981896718833776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9199848742267562587.post-3818367244589411972010-04-01T08:14:00.798-06:002010-04-01T08:14:00.798-06:00Wow... well, this is sure a tribute to "diffe...Wow... well, this is sure a tribute to "different strokes" and, I suppose, the Myers-Briggs test (among other choices).
