Uintas Hiking, Flowers, Chipmunks and 2 Cool Things About the Remarkable Buttercup Family

At the end of May I went up to Southern Idaho for a bike race. While I was up there I thought, “Hey, this is really nice up here, I should come back with the family.” So I did, and we had a great weekend.

IMG_0192 Late last month I did a bike race in the Uintas. While I was up there- even though I was freezing wet and shivering- I managed to think, “Hey, this is really nice up here, I should come back with the family.” So Sunday, continuing along my theme of returning to attractive race venues when not racing, we did a great family hike up in the Uintas.

IMG_0186 I described the Uintas previously in this post, where I was XC skiing through Lodgepole Pine forests at around 8,000 feet. The same gently rolling topology that makes them so amenable to XC travel in Winter also makes them attractive for family hikes in Summer.

We started our hike a bit higher than I ski in the Uintas in Winter, at just over 10,000 feet at the Crystal Lake trailhead, about an hour’s drive from Salt Lake. Though only an hour’s drive, the High Uintas feel a world away.

Notch Pass Hike Route In this post I’ve included several vista/scenery shots from the hike. If you compare these with my typical Wasatch shots (such as in the previous post) you’ll notice the immediate and obvious differences in both terrain and forest cover.

Tangent: The terrain of the Uintas is worth spending a moment on. Most hikers and XC skiers are drawn to the Uintas because- like us- they appreciate the rolling, relatively mellow terrain, at least when compared to the steep slopes of the Wasatch. But I’m convinced that this mellow, rolling terrain has a hand in one of the less cheerful aspects of the range- every once in a while, people just disappear in the Uintas.

IMG_0189 Since I’ve lived in Utah, once every year or so, someone gets lost/disappears up there. Sometimes they get found a day or so later. One time their bodies were found the following Spring. And still another time, a young boy was never seen again. What’s interesting about these mishaps is that this type of thing practically never happens in the Wasatch. Oh sure, people die here- from avalanches or accidents or such. But they don’t just disappear, like they do in the Uintas.

My “theory” is the culprit is the terrain and forest cover. In the Wasatch, you’re generally hiking on a slope. You’re going up or down, and as such it’s fairly hard to get “lost.” And the sub-timberline forests of the Wasatch are pretty dense with brushy undergrowth, which minimizes the tendency to wander away off trail.

IMG_0210 But in the Uintas, you spend a lot of the time on level or rolling terrain, with lots of little ups and downs, and so you don’t always instinctively know on which slope of which mountain or valley you’re traversing. And the forest is open and inviting, with wide, walk-able space between the trees. And if a late summer snow-shower should put a couple of inches down on the ground, well, it quickly becomes non-obvious which opening in the trees is the actual trail you’re following.

Anyway, my long-winded point is that it’s a good idea to teach your kids what to do when they get lost before hiking anywhere, but especially in the Uintas.

Uinta Forests

IMG_0188 The forests up here at 10,000 – 11,000 feet are of a much different character than my regular Wasatch haunts. The Aspens have been left down a thousand feet below, as have nearly all of their shrubby, leafy associates. This forest is purely coniferous, and what’s more, it’s comprised entirely of just 3 threes: Engelmann Spruce, Subalpine Fir and Lodgepole Pine. The Spruce and Fir we know already from the back home, but together with the Lodgepole they dominate the landscape in a way they never do in the Wasatch.

And so hiking in he Uintas is an altogether different experience- a fairyland stroll through and past dark, stately groves from one stunning alpine lake to another.

IMG_0198 But down on the ground things are different as well. Up here the snows have just melted; remnant snowbanks linger in shady spots. And all across the recently thawed meadows, flowers are springing up (pic right)- yellow ones and white ones. The yellow flowers are our old friend the Glacier Lily. Over nearly 4 months we’ve followed this little guy all the way from the mouth of Dry Creek a mile from my house, clear up to just below timberline. I don’t think there’s a flower that better says, “Watching the World Wake Up” than Erythronium grandiflorum*

*Which, coincidentally, was the first flower I ever profiled in this blog.

IMG_0238 But the white flowers were something I hadn’t seen before. They’re all over the place up there right now- carpeting meadows, lining stream banks. They’re Marsh Marigolds, Caltha leptosepala. (pics left & below, right)

Unlike so many of the flowers I’ve blogged about recently, Marsh Marigold isn’t a member of the Rose family. IMG_0239 Rather it’s a member of another family that we’ve actually already bumped into several times, but which I’ve never formally introduced” The Buttercup Family, Ranunculaceae. Though less obvious in either the backcountry or the supermarket than Rosaceae, it’s a family worth knowing for a couple of reasons-one that’s really cool to botanists, and another that’s really cool to me.

First Cool Thing

Ranunculaceae is cool to botanists because it’s considered a “primitive” angiosperm family, in that the structure of their flowers has many traits in common with those of some of the earliest flowering plants.

Geeky Side Note: Specifically, many of the flower components- such as stamens and pistils- that are often joined or “fused” via common attachment in more “advanced” families are separately attached to the flower in Ranunculacea. Most flowers in this family display more “primitive” petal and sepal connections and structure and lack more “advanced” features such as a clear calyx or corolla. Many Buttercup family species, including Marsh Marigold, have variable number of petals and sepals.

Other Buttercup Family members we’ve already looked at include Clematis, Larkspur and Columbine.

IMG_0194 Marsh Marigold occurs throughout the Rockies, across the Northwest and clear up into Alaska. Alongside Glacier Lilies it’s almost always the first thing to pop after the snows melt. But it’s not the only Buttercup up here. When you crouch down in a Uinta meadow and start poking around, you’ll often notice that some of the Marsh Marigolds look a bit different (pic left). Their petals* are broader and fewer (usually only five.) And the leaves are different as well- not ovaloid, but deeply lobed and palmate, almost reminiscent of a wild geranium leaf.

*Psst- they’re not really “petals”, as we’ll see in a moment…

IMG_0193 In fact they’re not Marsh Marigolds at all, but White Globeflowers, Trollius albiflorus. (pic left) T. albiflorus is a close cousin of C. leptosepala, and almost always grows alongside it. But in Utah its range is far more limited. It occurs only in the Uintas; you’ll never find one in the Wasatch (so far as I know.)

Tangent: If you live in the Northeast, there’s a close relative, Yellow Globeflower, T. laxus, that looks exactly like this guy except the sepals are yellow instead of white. It’s supposedly pretty rare now, occurring in patches between Michigan and Connecticut.

Second Cool Thing

In addition to their similar appearance, blooming times and environments, Marsh Marigold and Globeflower have something else fascinating in common, which leads me to the thing about the Buttercup family that is really cool to me: they have no petals.

Marigold Underside Ranunculacea flowers are some of the most structurally interesting and unusual flowers in the Intermountain West. In particular I find fascinating the many different and ingenious ways they’re put sepals to good use. On a Marsh Marigold , you can quickly confirm this by flipping the flower upside-down; the white “petals” are sepals, corrected directly to the stem, with no “buffering” green sepals below. Western Clematis, our favorite local climbing vine in the Wasatch, does exactly the same thing. It’s 4 lavender “petals are also sepals, and it’s true petals are the diminutive little lime-green leaflets cuddling the stamens inside.

Larkspur Sideview caption Larkspur is even more interesting. The “spur” is formed by the topmost (of 5) sepal, which juts back at a 90 degree angle to the stem. Larkspur of course has both sepals and petals. The sepals are the purple “petals” you see as you ride by; the true petals are the soft white striped with lavender petals inside.

But the most structurally-interesting Buttercup around here is Columbine. Columbine SideviewI’ve blogged about this flower a couple of times already, and it’s hard not to pay attention to it in the forest, but I never really got up close and figure out how this guy was actually put together until a few weeks ago. Like Larkspur, Columbine has backward-pointing “spurs”, but it has 5 of them. But the fascinating thing about Columbine spurs is that they’re formed not by the sepals- but by the petals. And the “petals” that you see when you face the flower head-on are actually sepals. It’s as though the flower is put together ass-back-wards, and it yet it’s arguably one of the most attractive flowers anywhere.

Side Note: One of the surprises of this project for me has been just how many different ways there are to be a flower. Whenever I take the time to get down and really check out how one is put together, I almost always find something that surprises me.

IMG_0191 Before leaving the Uintas, I should mention its namesake rodent, the Uinta Chipmunk, Tamias umbrinus, which is pretty common in in high-altitude forests in the Intermountain West, and which several appearances on our hike.

I’ve only blogged about one other squirrel so far in this blog, the Red Squirrel. I mention this because in spite of similar form and lifestyles, according to recent genetic research these 2 species last shared a common ancestor somewhere around 33-35 million years ago- half as far back in time as the dinosaurs.

Tangent: OK, the real reason I’m including this bit about Chipmunks in an otherwise botany-geek post is simply to show off my new camera. I took this Chipmunk shot (above, right) with the 12X zoom- not bad for a little point & shoot. My old camera’s 12X zoom produced dismally grainy and blurry snaps, such as those I used in several of my birdfeeder posts last winter.

CHolster20 Nested Tangent: Oh, and this reminds me- Camera-Holster 2.0 is a total score! Fits great on the Camelback or Daypack shoulder-strap, has a huge, top-side super-sticky Velcro cover, and holds the camera so tight I can’t shake it out even with the flap open and case upside-down. (Thanks Enel!) My break-through was not buying a camera case; I bought a cell-phone case instead. Much smaller, tighter fit, better profile and more secure. Wal-Mart*, $9.99.

*Yeah, yeah, made in China, slave labor, blah, blah…

gmgs In much of Utah, the rodent that is most often mistaken for a Chipmunk is this guy, the Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus lateralis (pic left, not mine). The easy way to tell the 2 apart is by looking at their faces; a Chipmunk’s stripes extend to its head, but a GM Ground Squirrel’s doesn’t. Their similar coloration patterns are almost certainly the result of convergent evolution. These 2 guys last shared a common ancestor over 30 million years ago, only slightly more recently than either shared one with the Red Squirrel. (For reference, cats and dogs last shared a common ancestor only ~20 million years ago, and we and chimpanzees shared our last only 5-7 million years ago.)

Tangent: Coincidentally on Wednesday morning I nearly ran over a Uinta Chipmunk* on my road bike. I was descending Big Cottonwood Canyon with Teammate Elliott and another teammate- “Teammate-Justin.” Elliott was in the lead and gave us a slow-down hand-signal; a fawn was crossing the road. We slowed, passed and were laughing about hitting a deer at 40 MPH, when suddenly Elliott and Justin swerved right and left, leaving me bearing down on a Chipmunk** at (probably) 25-30 MPH, It darted right, then left, then right again, all in a fraction of a second, faster than I could have activated a finger on the brake lever. One more “left” and I would’ve crushed it.

*Or maybe it was a Ground Squirrel…

Cool Teammate-Elliott Story

But the real reason I’m telling this story is what happened next. We rounded the next bend, our speed building back up over 40MPH and passed a stretch where a couple of 1” – 6” rocks/pebbles lay strewn across our lane (a frequent occurrence in the canyons, due to minor rockslides.) When cyclists are in a pack, the lead rider typically warns riders behind of such obstacles through a simple hand-signal- a finger pointed down in the case of a rock or pothole- on whichever side the obstacle lies.

TE 40MPH cut I’ve mentioned in a previous post what a phenomenally skilled and coordinated cyclist Teammate-Elliott is. As we rounded the corner, we passed between 2 sizable rocks, each roughly 6” across. And in the middle of the turn, at 40MPH, at a ~30-degree lean-angle, Elliott removed both hands from the bars, pointed downward at each simultaneously and returned his hands to the bars faster than you could say, “obstacle.” I am telling you, the guy knows what he is doing on a bicycle.

Anyway, the Uintas are cool, inviting and beautiful right now. As things heat up this week, they’d make a great day-trip for the coming weekend.

Old Mormon Neighbors and the Fabulous Rose Family

This Part, Like So Many Of My Intros, Seems Like A Tangent, But Will Turn Out Not To Be

One night last week Awesome Wife and I were out in the front yard with the Trifecta when a couple of elderly neighbors- let’s call them the “Sontags”- who live about a block from us walked by. We see these neighbors maybe once or twice a year, and so when we do, we stop for a polite chat.

We have several couples like these in our ‘hood- older couples whose children have long since grown up and moved away, and who’ve lived in the neighborhood so long, I think they probably brought their stuff in on handcarts. Seriously, they’ve lived here for many, many, years/decades.

Tangent: Here’s something weird. We have a number of elderly couples in our neighborhood, both Mormon and non-Mormon. Strangely, all of the elderly couples who go for walks together are Mormon. This isn’t true for younger couples or families- just old folks. Even more strangely, of the few* old folks in the ‘hood who’ve ever snapped or scowled at our kids, all are non-Mormon. Huh. I wonder if there’s a lesson there. Get me a handcart.

*OK, just 3, so it’s not a very scientific sampling…

Awesome Wife and I refer to these semi-annual old-neighbor chats as the Standard Old Mormon Neighbor Conversation, because although the details vary, these conversations always follow the same 3-point outline:

1- A brief review of who we are, when we moved to the neighborhood (7 years ago), our childrens’ names, genders and ages. While it may seem silly that we have this conversation after so many years, it’s spurred in part by the fact that we don’t attend the local church (ward) and our kids don’t attend the local school*.

*The Trifecta attend public school, but a different school than that for which we are zoned. Long, not very interesting story.

This first stage of the conversation invariably concludes with a firm declaration/affirmation on the Importance Of Family. This is of course a big theme in Mormon culture and theology, and many Mormons- particularly older Mormons- will emphasize this theme in discussions with non-members, presumably because it’s an appealing, unifying theme on which people of all faiths can agree.

Tangent: Awesome Wife and I have joked that once- just once- we should disagree with this declaration/affirmation. We’d say, “Really? You think so? Man, our kids are a total pain in the ass. We really miss the days when we could stay out late and do a lot of drinking and partying…”

2- Reminiscence of How the Neighborhood Used to Be. This part involves the same story, which was really charming the first 15 or 20 times we heard it. Our house was one of the last to be built in the ‘hood, and apparently for years the local teens used to have bonfires on our lot and hang out and have a good time*. We’ve heard this story so many times now that we almost hear a vaguely passive-aggressive tone in it, as though we somehow took away the bonfire site. We want to say, “Hey, we didn’t build the place; we just showed up and bought it…”

*The telling of this part always involves “hot cocoa”. It’s like the Old-Generation Mormon analog for beer. The New-Generation analog is Diet Coke.

3- A Review of the Formidable Phylogeny of The Older Couple’s Family. Like old folks everywhere, the couple we’re chatting with will be proud of their children and grandchildren. Being Utah Mormons, we’re almost always talking about LOTS of children and grandchildren, which means that we can never follow along with this part of the conversation and get lost in a jumble of names, ages and professions. Now I know that if I really, really tried and understood the structure of their extended family, then these stories would make a lot more sense, and I could really appreciate the significance of the family members discussed and the relationships between them. But given that I only really chat with the “Sontags” once a year or so, it just doesn’t seem worth the investment of time and focus to really understand their family phylogeny.

Remember this last point. I’m coming back to it.

The Real Post Already

IMG_0146Friday I did one of my favorite mtn bike rides, the Mid-Mountain/ Wasatch Crest loop. The ride is wonderful for so many reasons- fast, smooth trails, wonderful views- but I particularly like it because it showcases so many of the plants I’ve blogged about*.

*It was even worth the roughly 24 hours of bad home-front karma I endured (i.e. I was way in the doghouse) for being a couple hours late. For some reason I always chronically underestimate the time required to complete this loop. Maybe I should quit stopping for so many photos. Oo- that reminds me: Camera-Holster 2.0 is a total winner, and I’ll blog about it in an upcoming post.

WCMM Ride Map The ride took me past so many of my favorite Wasatch trees- Aspen, White Fir, Subalpine Fir, Engelmann Spruce, Limber Pine, Curlleaf Mountain Mahogany, Gambel Oak, Bigtooth Maple- and I counted at least 32 different wildflowers blooming trailside (all but 2 of which I’ve already ID’d.) After 15 months at this project a ride like Friday’s, even though I was solo, felt almost like a reunion with old friends.

IMG_0111 When I first began paying attention to plants, I started with trees. They’re big, they get your attention, and there aren’t very many different ones in the Wasatch, so they’re easy to get into. Over the past year, I’ve paid more attention to forbs (non-woody flowering plants.) Their flowers make fun and easy keys for initial identification, and as I’ve gotten to know them, their leaves and stems have become familiar as well, such that I now recognize a fair number of forbs when they’re not in bloom.

But even if you know every tree and wildflower in the Wasatch, you’re still missing out on a huge portion of the living biomass all around you: shrubs.

Shrubs And Me

The term “shrub” drives me a little crazy; it’s such a catch-all. The very first shrubs we looked at in this blog were desert shrubs- things like Sagebrush and Blackbrush and Creosote. These are clearly “shrubs.” They’re certainly not trees, but they’re bigger than forbs or grasses. They stand more or less alone, and they’re rarely higher than chest height.

But then we moved up into the foothills, and things started to get a bit more complicated. Instead of just standard “shrubs”, we also now had sorta-kinda shrubs, things like Scrub Oak and Bigtooth Maple and Mountain Mahogany that sometimes were shrubs, but other times were clearly trees.

IMG_0844 And then when the Aspen and PLT forests melt out and you move up above 7,000 – 8,000 feet, “shrub” means the confusing jumble of waist-to-chest-high leafy stuff growing on the forest floor. 2 of these- Serviceberry and Chokecherry- we’ve already identified, but those were the easy ones, as they often grow out in the open as well, where they can easily be picked out. So starting today I’m going to start picking off the leafy understory shrubs, not all at once, but one every week or so throughout the summer.

IMG_1008 For the past couple of weeks this guy’s (pic left) been driving me crazy. It’s real common up above 7,500 feet, grows chest-high or so, always in the shade, and has palmately-lobed leaves with serrated edges. It looks a lot like some type of currant or gooseberry maybe, and so I suspected it was a member of the genus Ribes. But nothing fit.

IMG_0721 Then about 2 weeks ago it started flowering. And the flowers (pic right) didn’t look anything like any kind of currant flowers. Rather they looked a bit like Chokecherry flowers, or other flowers of Rosaceae, the Rose family, with 5 petals, and numerous stamens. And later that day I easily ID’d it: Ninebark, Physocarpus sp.

IMG_0085 There are ~10 species of Ninebarks in North America, occurring naturally in every state except Hawaii, Louisiana and Mississippi. 2 of those- Mallow Ninebark, P. malvaceus, and Mountain Ninebark, P. monogynus- are native to Utah. They look aggravatingly similar, but I’m inclined to go with Mallow Ninebark, as it favors richer, damper soils, which is where I almost always seem to spot it in the Wasatch.

IMG_0255 The plant is named for its peeling bark (pic right), which supposedly can be peeled 9 layers deep, though my own efforts only isolated 4 or 5 layers before hitting bare wood. Currant bark doesn’t peel the same way, so it’s a quick identifier between the two. In any case, once you ID it, you start seeing it all over the place.

What threw me off of course is that the leaf shape didn’t make me think of the Rose family, and I when I finally ID’d it I thought, “Wow another Rosaceae…” Seriously, I can’t think of how many times I’ve ID’d a plant over the last 15 months, looked it up and read “…a member of the Rose family…” It’s not just when I’m out in the backcountry. In my yard, in my kitchen fruit bowl, in the supermarket- I see members of this family everywhere. Unlike the “Sontags”, I run into various members of the Rose family every single day of the year. And so over the long weekend I thought: Maybe it’s time to figure out what the deal is with this family, and understand just who’s who and how they’re related to everybody else.

All About The Rose Family

IMG_0860 There are over 3,000 species in the Rose family, including everything from Apples to Pears to Peaches to Almonds to Raspberries to (of course) Roses. In this blog we’ve looked at numerous other members of the family, including Blackbrush, Cliffrose, Bitterbrush, Wild Rose, Mountain Mahogany, Thimbleberry, Serviceberry and Chokecherry. In the backcountry or the backyard you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Rosaceae, and they’re arguably one of the most successful families of angiosperms. It’s amazing that this huge array of trees, shrubs and forbs are descended from a common ancestor that probably lived sometime after the last T. Rex keeled over, likely in North America*.

*Apparently the oldest fossils that are clearly Rosaceae date from the Eocene and have been found in Washington state and BC.

But what I really wanted to know was how all these things are related to each other, and to that end I managed to dig up some light weekend reading: Phylogeny and classification of Rosaceae, D. Potter et al, 2006.

All About Scientific Papers, Why They Are So Boring, And Why Snark Is Important To Science

Tangent: Over the course of this project I’ve read or skimmed several dozen (maybe 100+?) Scientific papers and read/skimmed several hundred abstracts. When I first started reading such papers I was amazed at just How Phenomenally Boring they are.

I naively expected that scientific papers would begin with astounding breath-taking discoveries, like you see in the headlines of supermarket tabloids. You know, stuff like “Frozen Neanderthal Discovered In Antarctic Ice.” But no, they usually start off with an abstract that briefly highlights the goal of the research and ultimate findings in very non-exciting terms, like,

“Phylogenetic relationships among 88 genera of Rosaceae were investigated using nucleotide sequence data from…Zzzzz”

Nested Tangent: These abstracts- strangely enough- often start out in the 3rd person. Why is it in the 3rd person? Did you investigate the relationships, or was it some other guys and you just happened to be hanging out in the lab? Maybe it’s supposed to be like a book jacket or something, written by a “neutral” 3rd party…

From there the paper goes into the introduction, which although brief, is often the most valuable part of the paper to a layman, because it’ll identify other, earlier papers that often are more relevant to the topic you’re trying to figure out than this one.

After the Introduction, the paper gets into the longest, most detailed, most phenomenally boring heart of the paper: Materials and Methods. Reading through this section is borderline-impossible for a layman, and is probably one of the 4 most boring things I’ve ever attempted. Here’s an actual excerpt:

“GenBak 18S sequence of Primus persica, Spiraea x vanhoutei, and Photinia fraseri were used to design a forward (18S1F: GACTGTGAAACTGCGAATGGTC) and a reverse PCR primer (18S2R:GTTCACCTACGGAAACCTTGTTACG) as well as two internal primers…”

And it goes on like this for pages and pages! Finally the paper gets to “Results” followed by “Discussion” which has (or doesn’t have) the nuggets of actual helpful information you were originally hoping to find.

When I first started reading scientific papers, I wondered: Why all the boring “Materials and Methods” stuff? Who cares? But of course over time it dawned on me: Other scientists care, because it’s the only way to keep researchers from Making Shit Up.

Here’s something I’ve learned about Real Scientists. They are- by and large- snarky. If you spend much time reading scientific literature, you’ll soon notice that scientists are often picking apart, questioning or downright refuting the results of other scientists. The only way to defend yourself against the continual onslaught of Snarky Scientific Critique is to document the living daylights out of what you did and how you did it.

Nested Tangent: Of course, Scientists aren’t actually any snarkier than middle-aged men are in general. But- and here’s the critical distinction- they’re snarky and informed, unlike regular, uniformed middle-aged snarky guys who just listen to talk radio and snark about the government or immigrants or whatever

When I first noticed this I thought: How annoying. These guys spend so much time snarking at each other, and defending each other from snark, that their papers are almost unreadable. But as time as passed, I’ve come to see that Snark isn’t a distraction from science; rather it is a core principle of science and – I believe- the very foundation of the modern scientific method.

Science works because it is self-correcting. Old, bad hypotheses and theories get questioned, changed or eventually thrown out, not because some nice smiling old tweed-wearing gentlemen agree to it over tea, but because legions of snarky scientists are constantly duking it out. Critics of science (who always seem to know the least about it) sometimes claim that science is just another system of belief, like an ideology or a religion. But religions or ideologies don’t constantly correct and change themselves through ongoing internal snark. And while this continual snark-fest may seem bizarre to the casual observer, it eventually puts men on the moon, eradicates smallpox and frees wrongly-convicted inmates. Snark delivers.

Genetic research in recent years indicates that some of the traditional groupings within Rosaceae may be paraphyletic and Rose family tree is in flux. The findings in Phylogeny and classification of Rosaceae seem to indicate that Rose family consists of 3 major ancestral branches, about which there are 2 really cool things. The first is that all 3 occur all over the place right here in Utah, and the second is that we’ve already looked at oodles of members from all 3 branches.

Thimbleberry The first, and most distantly related, major branch includes things like Roses and Raspberries. Wild Rose and Thimbleberry (pic right) are 2 examples we’ve looked at, but in addition to the Raspberries and Blackberries it also includes Strawberries, Cinquefoil, Apache Plume and garden herbs, like Lady’s Mantle.

The second (and smallest) branch is the one most people don’t think of having anything to do with Roses. IMG_5789It includes Mountain Mahogany (pic left), Cliffrose, Bitterbrush and Dryas (Mountain Avens). This branch is cool not only because it contains so many foothill and desert plants we’ve looked at in this blog, but also because- with the exception of Dryas- it’s strictly limited to Western North America. These are our “roses”, and though small, this branch has evolved everything from full-on trees to arctic wildflowers to live-saving shrubs.

Serviceberry Flowers1 4 19 08 The third branch is by far the largest and includes not only so many of the plants we’ve looked at in this blog- Serviceberry (pic right), Chokecherry and wild pear- but also practically half of everything in the fruit section at the supermarket, including cherries, peaches, plums, almonds, apples, pears and so much more.

bbrush One of the interesting things in the results of this paper is which plant belongs to which branch. Here’s a quick example: Blackbrush (pic left). Dry, shrubby, scratchy, with tough little waxy leaves. I would’ve bet for sure it’d be in the Mountain Mahogany-Bitterbrush Group. But it’s not; it’s in the Apple- Serviceberry group, and actually appears to be more closely-related to Apples and Pears than are Peaches or Plums!

CMM Stand2 But the most interesting thing from the results is the relationship between kinship and form. Historically species within the Rose family have been grouped according to form, such as fruit structure, under the presumption that species displaying common form shared more recent ancestry. pear tree hood But the shocker of the paper is this: species with similarly-formed fruits, or floral structure, trees, herbaceous plants and even specific chromosome counts have evolved independently, multiple times within the family. Trees are an easy example: Mountain Mahogany and Pear trees (pic left) evolved their tree-ness completely separately.

Conjectural Tangent*: Though the paper didn’t state it, I assume that the common proto-Rosaceae ancestor was woody, because all Rosaceae trees share the same common eudicot standard wood architecture. This in contrast to say the monocots, in which various trees display wildly different wood architectures (think Palm vs. Joshua Tree), each having “re-evolved” wood from a presumed herbaceous common ancestor.

*Yes, this is a new kind of tangent (hence the new color), which involves me going off both randomly and half-cocked.

But here’s a cooler example: “drupaceous” fruits (think “stone” fruits) have apparently evolved independently 4 times within Rosaceae. (Though to be clear, the common “stone” fruits we think of in the supermarket- cherries, plums, peaches, almonds and apricots- are members of the genus Prunus and are apparently monophyletic.)

Over and over again in this blog, without intending to, I keep coming across example after example of convergent evolution. IMG_0861 C4, CAM, Hummingbirds and Hummingbird Moths, Old and New World Vultures- even the amino acid substitution in the opsin genes of humans and butterflies- all of these are wonderful examples, but to see such richness of convergence in a single family of flowering plants really brings home the power, ingenuity and beauty of evolution. Think about that the next time you admire a Rose.

*I mean, a real, WILD rose, not those phony petalized-stamens freak show things you buy at the florist…

RTree2 ccherryPhysocarpus’ closest relatives- excluding a couple of things you never heard of*- turn out to be Prunus, which of course includes its frequent neighbor in the Wasatch, Chokecherry (flower pic, right).

*Like Catalina Ironwood, Lyonothamnus floribundus. See, I told you- you never heard of it.

Ninebark’s shade-tolerance makes it a wonderful shrub for North-facing gardens. Although most nurseries sell cultivars of Eastern Ninebark. P. opulifolius, the plant reproduces readily from cuttings, so there’s nothing to stop you from “shopping” for a bit on your next ride/hike.

IMG_0084 I left the best thing about Ninebark for last. As a mountain biker, it is about the most benign shrub to crash into in the Wasatch*. Just be sure to close your eyes tight before you hit.

*Except for Thimbleberry. Way, way soft. Like toilet paper, which it works great as, by the way.

Catch-Up: Rides, Small Teammates, Adding to Blogroll, Partial Nudity and Bonus Work-Related Rant

This is going to be a bit of a hodge-podge of a post, for which I apologize up-front, and which I’ve tried to make up for by including a gratuitous partial nudity shot*. June 30 is the end of the quarter where I work, which is always busy time. And when it’s mid-2009 and you’re the head of sales, it’s even busier.

*Oo- that should totally drive up my traffic…

Work-Related Rant

Tangent: I’ve worked really hard in this blog never to whine about work. Today I’m breaking that rule. Here we go:

You know how in stories about abusive husbands, the common theme is that the abuser always says, this time it’ll be different, I’m going to do better, I won’t let you down again, I’m going to keep my word, etc., etc.? And of course, they never do, because they’re unreliable-habitual-scumbag-liars.

Well you know who’s exactly like that in the business world? Purchasing agents at Fortune 500 companies. I’m serious, and if you’re in sales, and you sell to Fortune 500’s, you know it is so totally true. Every quarter, you end up negotiating some special deal with a dozen+ purchasing guys, and you’re way clear up-front that if you give them the oh-so-special deal they’re badgering you for, you need it by the end of the quarter. And they always say, oh yeah of course, absolutely, you can count on me. But then, June 30th, after promising you the PO by June 30 for months straight, it turns out Purchasing is just “too backed up*”, or the favorite for this year: “An additional approval is needed.”

pAgent caption *”Too backed up.” This one is my favorite. How can a purchasing department be “too backed up?” How hard can it be to fill out a few fields on a computer screen so the system can spit out a PO#? We’re not talking about mapping the human genome or splitting the atom here…

You see, Fortune 500’s are reacting to the economic downturn by requiring higher-level “executives” to approve formerly-routine purchases. (Never mind that the “executive” doesn’t use or even understand what the product or service in question is.) And this “executive” is invariably someone who has picked the last 2 days of the quarter to attend a European conference, conduct a “strategic planning retreat*”, or hike the Appalachian Trail.

*Please. Next time I play hooky to spend a day mountain biking and drinking beer, I’m telling people it was a “strategic planning retreat.”

Bad as Fortune500 Purchasing folks are, Higher Education is even worse. I used to wonder what happened to PhD candidates whose dissertations were rejected. Now I know: They spend the rest of their days toiling away in the university purchasing dept., forever venting their bitterness and failed hopes upon hapless salespeople.

Catch-Up

AFO Mill Creek 6 29 09 Whew, that was fun. I feel much better. So like I was saying, this is a bit of a hodge-podge post. First some catch-up. Despite the busy week , I’ve gotten a couple of great rides in. The first was Monday night, a last Before-the-Gate-Opens ride on the upper Mill Creek trails, with KanyonKris, UTRider and SkiBikeJunkie, and it was possibly the Best Mill Creek Ride Ever (pic right = me on ride, courtesy of KanyonKris.) The trails were buff, tacky and hiker-free, the road (almost) car-free, and the forest was exploding with life- Bluebells and Utah Sweetpea everywhere, and the Aspens are now fully-cloaked in green. (Pic below, left. The softer light of early morning or early evening really brings out the colors in Wasatch forests; I really think those are the best times to get out.)

mc aspen 6 29 09 This was my first time meeting both UTRider and SkiBikeJunkie; both are great guys and great riders. One of the nicest, unexpected benefits of this whole project has been getting to know a bunch of great people with similar interests, either in person or online. These guys are a blast to ride with, and I look forward to getting out with them again soon.

Partial Nudity Shot

KanyonKris and UTRider have already blogged about the ride, so I won’t re-hash their ride reports, except to include in this post the 2 best photos they somehow omitted. First, is SkiBikeJunkie clearing under a really tight deadfall*, which appears down below when I talk about his blog. Even better is this shot of KanyonKris exposing himself mid-climb. If you met Kris, you’d never suspect he was an exhibitionist. Save this photo- it’ll be worth something someday when he’s famous.

KKris Cheek*Moments earlier I tried and failed the same under-the-deadfall move, in an ugly, uncoordinated snag-fest of a 6-foot+ man on a large bicycle with a Camelbak on his bike and absolutely no concept of spatial relations. It wasn’t pretty. Actually I saw last night that SBJ used the same shot, but it’s a good one, and worth posting twice.

Another Great Ride

The 2nd great ride was an early road ride up and down Big Cottonwood Canyon (BCC) Wednesday morning, which for some reason I hadn’t yet done this year. I’ve decided that BCC is absolutely my favorite road-biking canyon in the Wasatch. It’s fast and thrilling without being terrifying/borderline suicidal (i.e like LCC). The pavement is silky-smooth, and the descent gradual enough that even at 40-45 MPH you can really savor and enjoy the different elevation zones on the way down. From the Blue Spruces up top down to the Junipers at the canyon mouth, this descent’s got it all.

Tangent: I did this ride with a teammate- let’s call him “Elliott”, and let’s also say he could well be “the big brother of Teammate-Jason.” Teammate-Elliott’s one of the 2 fastest racers on our team and just upgraded to Cat2. Lately I’ve been doing more riding with him, and it’s a great example of something I’ve long believed to be true for both road and mountain-biking: if you want to be a better rider, you need to ride with people who are better riders than you. If may be fun, and ego-boosting, to be the alpha-dog in your regular pack, but it you want to improve, you need to get out at least part of the time with riders who push you. Every ride I do with Teammate-Elliott I learn or observe something he does that makes me a little bit smarter, and I’m becoming a better roadie for it.

Nested Tangent: OK, so there actually is one thing I don’t like about riding with Teammate-Elliott: He’s, uh… “not large” (wracking my brain for a euphemism for “small” here…) Where I’m 6’2” and 173 lbs, I’m going to guess Teammate-Elliott is maybe 5’7” and ~140 lbs., which means that riding behind him provides hardly any drafting benefit.

Elliott Drafting When we’re on group training rides I go to great lengths and machinations to ensure I don’t wind up immediately behind him in a pace-line. But when it’s just the 2 of us, well, I always get a workout.

Part Of Post Where I Humbly Acknowledge Making A Mistake

QuickDraw5 OK, the next topic is acknowledging a mistake. As frequent readers know, I welcome corrections and try to acknowledge and correct mistakes- particularly in plant or bug ID’s- whenever possible. But this error is a bit different. A couple months back I went on and on bragging about the new camera-holster I set up on my Camelbak strap. And, on the whole, it’s been great. I’ve gotten many more shots, wasting much less time, and gotten them quickly.

But 2 readers- let’s call them “Enel and “WheelDancer”- commented on that post, urging caution and additional preparations lest the camera work its way out and fall to the ground. At the time I thought, “Ah, I’m fine. It’s never gonna fall out…”, which of course is exactly what it did Monday night, as I was climbing the Mill Creek road alongside SkiBikeJunkie.

Side Note: So here I am, SkiBikeJunkie’s known me for all of 15 minutes, and I drop and destroy a $200 camera. The guy must have thought, “OK this Watcher-guy is a complete Utard…” but he was gracious about the whole deal, even though he probably could’ve gotten a great post out of it.

Cookie Closeup That’s 3 Canon PowerShots destroyed in 4 years. I am singlehandedly supporting that company through the recession. But on a lemons-to-lemonade note, I’ve already replaced it with newer/better model- the SD780 IS. It’s the 12 megapixel version, and should do a much better job on video (particularly zoom- video) and >3X zoom shots. The initial experiments with close-up shots seem promising as well. Here’s a half-eating chocolate chip cookie* from last night.

*Yes, it’s an odd photo-subject. But be honest- when you buy a new camera, don’t you take a bunch of really stupid pics right away?

I’m still working out the revised holster-system details, but I’ve already secured the most important element: the 2-year Best Buy protection plan, which includes 1 drop/break replacement.

Tangent: I am almost always anti-insurance*, excepting things like health, basic auto and homeowners. I never buy extended warranties or “protection plans” or any of that, figuring that an army of corporate actuaries has stacked the odds hopelessly against me. But upon reflection it occurred to me that I am probably rougher on a camera than about 95% of typical PowerShot customers, so I got off my high horse and ponied up the $45.

*The trickiest insurance to buy is life insurance, where the key is to purchase enough coverage to protect your family should you die in a wreck, get eaten by a wild coyote, or ride your bike off a natural bridge, yet not so much coverage that the prospect of your death becomes in any way appealing to a potential beneficiary. Corollary= if you have a big policy, don’t piss off your spouse.

Updating Blogroll

SBJ limbo I haven’t updated my blogroll in quite sometime, so today I’ve added 3 new ones. First is SkiBikeJunkie, (here’s the cool shot I was talking about earlier) a frequent commenter on this blog and fellow racer, whose own posts are interesting, insightful and thought-provoking across a spectrum of both cycling and non-cycling related topics. More often than not, an SBJ post will leave me scratching my chin, thinking about something I maybe hadn’t really noticed or considered before.

JH neander Second, is another “hard-core” science blog, John Hawks Weblog. John’s a Professor of Anthropology at U. Wisconsin, Madison, who blogs about all sorts of interesting developments and insights related to genetics and early human evolution. In particular his posts related to Neanderthals are simply fascinating. It’s a bit different from most blogs, not just in that the guy really knows what he’s talking about (so pretty much the complete opposite of this blog, really) but in that it’s a no-comments blog. A fascinating bit of trivia about John is that his doctoral adviser was Milford Wolpoff. If you’ve followed the major developments in paleoanthropology over the last 20 years, you probably already know who Wolpoff is: the leading proponent of the “multi-regional” theory of human evolution, which has been largely at odds with the more (of late) commonly accepted “Out-of-Africa” theory. Anyway, great stuff.

Finally is something a bit different. Last week I was contacted by the Outdoor writer for the Tooele Transcript Bulletin, looking for information for a great piece he did this week on Aspen-carvings. Clint Thomsen also has his own blog, Bonneville Mariner. cropped-100_3763 The title references ancient Lake Bonneville (which I described in this post and was pretty much the Coolest Thing Ever, so if you’re clueless about Lake Bonneville, drop what you’re doing and go read it right now), and 100_2864-WPClint’s blog focuses on the natural and human history of the greater Toole Valley, an area largely ignored by most of us along the Wasatch Front, despite it’s being our “front yard.” Clint’s Outdoor column appears weekly in the Transcript-Bulletin, and though it’s for-fee content, Clint reposts all of his (excellent) outdoor columns on his blog. (Clint included some kind words for this blog in this week’s column, for which I’m flattered and grateful.)

OK, that’s the housekeeping. I have a couple new shrubs to blog about, including one that, if you mtn bike or hike in the Wasatch, you are riding by All The Time. I originally intended to include that in this post, but I’m going to try and be better about not doing so many encyclopedia-length posts. So let’s stop here, and I’ll get back to shrubs over the weekend.
